Jiankou Great Wall – The Arrow Nock

Jiankou Great WallSince Great Wall is the main famous attraction in Beijing then it must be one of your destinations that you cannot miss. Beside Badaling and Mutianyu Great Wall as the most favorite sections, Jiankou Great Wall is also popular for its unique features.

Location of Jiankou Great Wall

Jiankou Great Wall or also known as Arrow Nock in English is located 73 kilometers north of Beijing. It will take about two hours driving from Beijing. Connected with Mutianyu Great Wall ten kilometers to the east and Huanghuacheng Great Wall to the west, it was built in 1368 at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, about six hundred years ago. Jiankou Great Wall got its name because the shape of the mountains where the wall was built is like an arrow with the collapsed ridge opening as its arrow nock. With total length of 9.3 miles, it stretches from “The Ox Horn Edge Wall” in the east to “The Nine-Eye Tower” in the north via “The Beijing Knot”. Jiankou Great Wall is a good example of Wild Great Wall. It became the popular hiking destination and also a favorites photographic spots.

 Buildings on Jiankou Great Wall

The major section of Jiankou Great Wall is built along a mountain ridge with large cliffs on each side, and due to the lack of repairs, now it is one of the most dangerous sections of the entire Great Wall. In total, Jiankou Great Wall has 22 watchtowers and has some main and must see spots includes The Nine-Eye Tower, The Beijing Knot and Stairway to the Heaven. The Nine Eye Tower has a watchtower with 9 holes resembling 9 eyes. The Beijing Knot is the meeting place for three different linking sections of the Great Wall at Jiankou. The Stairway to Heaven is the ladders go actually straight up, and they are so narrow that it is almost impossible to hold a foothold. It leads to ‘The Eagle Flies Facing Upward’, a watch tower built on the lofty peaks.

How to get to Jiankou Great Wall?

By Bus:

Take Bus No.916 at Dongzhimen, get off at Huairou Fangshan (diagonally opposite Huairou First Hospital). There you can find buses to Arrow Nock. The buses run between 10:00 am and 15:00 pm.

Take Bus 936 at Dongzhimen, get off at Yanxi Huandao in Huairou District. There are buses there to Arrow Nock. The buses run between 10:00 am and 15:00 pm.
